Categories and tags are one of the most important part of WordPress. Without understanding them, you may not get the true benefit of WordPress. Here in this post, I have tried to make you understand categories vs tags in WordPress.
WordPress has been one of the most popular content management system. It’s easy to use and simple to understand user interface has made it most popular content management system in the world.
WordPress uses MySQL to store contents which is an open source relational database management system. This relational database allows to create logical group of content. WordPress has been developed in such a way where contents are grouped together through categories and tags taxonomies. Taxonomy is a way of grouping things together, i.e. grouping contents together.
When we start to discuss about categories vs tags in WordPress, they seems to be similar. But there are many difference between them. Better understanding of categories and tags not only improve user experience but also increase the organic traffic to your website. That’s why, better understanding and use of categories and tags can overtake your competitors website by your website.
Before discussing categories vs tags in WordPress, lets discuss about them.
What is Categories in WordPress?
I have already mentioned that contents are grouped together through categories. So, categories are used to grouping contents which acts as a primary topic in a website. Each post must include at least one category but some posts may have more than one categories. The post having more than one categories is rare case. Probably, you may have seen many different categories such as SEO, Review, Politics, Tech, Social Media etc. in different website. These are the familiar example of categories.
Let us consider a WordPress blogger as an example. Let’s say the that blogger has created content about ‘theme review’ post of specific WordPress theme, say Avada Theme, one of the most popular WordPress theme on ThemeForest. The post will have the category like ‘Theme Review‘. Because the review of theme will have only one category, i.e. theme review. This is the simple and understandable category example.
How to create categories?
- Sign in to your website admin dashboard
- Go Posts -> Categories, then you will be taken to categories creation interface.
There is another way to create categories. Categories can be created during content creation from the right side as shown in fig below.
In this way, you can easily create categories.
What is Tags in WordPress?
We already knew that categories are used to create to grouping the contents whereas tags are used to create groups of content that apply to multiple categories. That means, multiple tags are applied in posts.
Here’s one of the best example of using tags in post:
Suppose, you are a football content writer and you write contents that focus on Barcelona Football Club’s transfer policy and suppose the targeted players are Robin van Persie, Daniel Suarez, Mario and Jesús Navas. In such content, the category will obviously be football because of the content related to football.
The possible tags in such contents are:
- Robin van Persie
- Daniel Suarez
- Mario Gomez
- Jesús Navas
- FC Barcelona
Why are there so many tags? Because the content is related to them. So while visitors browse the website via those tags, that content can be accessed.
In this way, we can easily include so many different tags in a single post.
How to create tags in WordPress?
Creating tags in WordPress is similar to that of creating categories.
- Sign to website admin dashboard
- Go Posts -> tags, then you will be taken to tags creation user interface from where you can easily create tags what you require.
Similarly, you can create tags during content creation similarly to that of categories.
But how can your website get organic traffic from tags?
In this case, what you have to understand is these players are search frequently on Google. So if have more and more quality/original contents related to them, there is chance of getting your website No. #1 position in Google search result. In this way, your website can get huge organic traffic from search engine.
How to optimize categories and tags in WordPress for search engine?
Many bloggers may suggest you not to allow Google to index your categories and tags but it is absolutely wrong. Because some of the World popular websites get thousands of visitor daily from category keyword search only.
One of the familiar example is Wpbeginner. This website gets around 90k to 100K visitors per month only from category keywords which is ‘wordpress tutorials‘ or ‘wordpress tutorial‘. Therse both keyword search volume has around 100k combined according to Google keyword planner tool. And with these keyword, www.wpbeginner.com has No. 1 position on Google.
So following this website as reference, you have to allow Google and other search engine to index categories and tags.
But how to do so? There is no difficult to do so. If you have not used any plugin which tells Google and other search engine not to index categories and tags, search engine will automatically index them. But by using Yoast SEO plugin, you can easily do it.
