Even though the name states otherwise, the “Yet Another Related Posts Plugin” is definitely not just another plugin. In fact its one of the best related posts plugins available for the WordPress community. The simple but useful features provided by YARPP has made it reach more than 300,000 active installs. In this post, I will show steps to configure Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) in WordPress.
Configure Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) in WordPress
Step 1: Download and Install the plugin
The first step of the process is downloading the package from the official WordPress website. Once the latest version of YARPP is downloaded, unzip and copy the obtained folder in to the wp-content/plugins/ directory of your website.
Go to the ‘Plugins’ section from your website’s backend and activate YARPP. Now the installation process is complete and the plugin is ready to be used.
Step 2: Go to YARPP settings page
Before we make use of the features provided by YARPP, it should be configured to suite the requirements of the user. You can go to the settings page of the plugin using one of the following methods.
- Clicking on ‘Settings’ link next to the plugin name in the ‘Plugins’ section
- Selecting YARPP from the ‘Settings’ menu
Settings page consists of tabs namely YARPP Basic (free version) and YARPP Pro (paid version). We will be discussing the configuration options of YARPP Basic below.
Step 3: Configure ‘The Pool’ option
You can configure the posts that are to be displayed as related for a specific post from this section. Posts can be disallowed by checking the names of categories you want to remove in the Disallow by Category section. In the Disallow by Tag section it can be selected whether to show password protected posts and the posts of which duration to be shown.
Step 4: Configure the ‘Relatedness” options
This section allows you to set the relatedness of your related posts. You can select the match threshold and whether to consider the titles, bodies, categories and tags when the posts are matched for relatedness. You can also specify whether to show results from all post types and whether to show only the previous posts to a specific post.
Step 5: Configure the ‘Display’ options
The Display section configures how the related posts are displayed in your WordPress website. This has two areas where you can configure Display options for your website and RSS.
In Display options for your website, you can specify whether to automatically display related content from Posts, Pages and Media. Each of these content types have separate checkboxes so that you can individually select them based on your requirement. Also the number of related posts, position of display and the display method (list, thumbnail etc.) and several other options can be configured from this section.
In the next section, Display options for RSS, you can select whether or not to display related posts in RSS feeds.
Once all these settings are configured and saved according to your requirements, you can view the results from the frontend of your website. But don’t worry, these settings aren’t permanent, and you always have the option of visiting the settings page from the backend and making modifications on the go. If you need more features for your related posts, you can also buy the YARPP Pro version.
